LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that all public transport services in the province’s cities will now be free, providing immediate relief to citizens amid rising petrol prices.
This includes the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electro Bus.
The initiative is part of a wider implementation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s national savings and austerity program in Punjab. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz described the relief package as a historic effort to protect the public during unprecedented global challenges.
In addition to free travel, financial support has been extended to farmers and motorcycle owners. Farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs100 per liter per acre, while registered motorcycle riders will get Rs100 for every 20 liters of fuel purchased.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for maintaining the supply and prices of petroleum products in Pakistan for one month despite global crises. She emphasized that billions of rupees in relief have been provided to help citizens during these difficult times.
She urged the public to prioritize public transport over personal vehicles during the ongoing crisis, highlighting that Pakistan is especially vulnerable to the global economic impact due to its reliance on imported oil. The Chief Minister assured that the government remains committed to easing the financial burden on the public as conditions improve.
