KARACHI – A judicial court ordered exhumation of Mir Raza’s grave and directed formation of medical board for fresh post-mortem examination in another development in the investigation into his controversial death.
Judicial Magistrate (East) approved a petition filed by Mir Raza’s father, who has consistently rejected the official narrative of suicide and alleged that his only son was brutally murdered. In its written order, the court instructed the Secretary of Health to immediately constitute a medical board and ensure the exhumation is carried out without delay.
During proceedings, Mir Raza’s father raised questions at police investigation and that critical questions surrounding his son’s death remained unanswered. He maintained that the initial inquiry failed to uncover the truth, making a second post-mortem essential. The state prosecutor did not oppose the request, prompting the court to remark, “The state is also with you.”
The case remained under intense scrutiny since Mir Raza’s death, with his family repeatedly challenging the findings of the original post-mortem report. According to his father, the body was handed over to the family within an hour, a move he believes compromised the investigation. He insists that his son did not die by suicide but was the victim of a brutal killing.
Fresh doubts over original findings also emerged from medical experts. Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed said that there were significant inconsistencies between the post-mortem report and the available photographs. She pointed to swelling and dark marks on different parts of the body, as well as conflicting indications regarding the trajectory of the gunshot wound, raising further questions about the circumstances of Mir Raza’s death.
Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi Azad Khan said the police surgeon’s observations were based solely on photographs rather than a physical examination of the body. He explained that the police relied on the report prepared by the medical legal officer but acknowledged that the family had the legal right to seek exhumation and a second post-mortem.
Adding to growing calls for an independent review, forensic expert urged authorities to appoint a medical board, arguing that the existing post-mortem report failed to examine several crucial aspects of the case. He stressed that all available evidence should undergo a fresh medical and forensic evaluation to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.
Lately, CTD Sindh successfully unlocked victim’s Apple Watch and recovered crucial digital evidence, including transaction records that could help reconstruct the events leading up to his death.
Police said the Apple Watch and iPhone, recovered earlier by Karachi East Police, had their data erased before being sent to the CTD’s digital forensic lab. While experts successfully retrieved information from the smartwatch, efforts are ongoing to access the iPhone.
Officials confirmed that investigators have gathered additional evidence but withheld details due to the ongoing probe. A press conference is expected within the next 48 hours to announce further developments as investigators continue analysing digital evidence, CCTV footage and forensic findings.
