Pakistani consumers are facing fuel-cost burden as taxes, levies, and various margins add up to more than Rs130 per litre of the amount paid for both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD).
As of August 24, 2026, petrol is being sold at Rs341.59 per litre, while Diesel costs Rs368.29 per litre. Consumers are paying Rs130.75 in taxes levies and different margins on petrol, while Diesel stands at Rs122.47 per litre.
The basic cost of Diesel is reported at Rs245.82 per litre, compared with its retail price of Rs368.29. That means Rs122.47 per litre is being added through various taxes, levies and margins.
Petrol carries an even larger reported additional burden, with Rs130.75 per litre added through the different components that make up its final price.
Petrol prices have been on a broadly upward path during the second half of August. The rate was around Rs325–328 per litre between August 10 and 13, before climbing to Rs331.20 on August 17 and Rs334.54 on August 18. It then reached Rs337.51 on August 19, edged up to Rs337.78 during August 20–21, and ultimately climbed to Rs341.59 per litre from August 22.
Compared with the mid-August levels, motorists are now paying roughly Rs13–17 more per litre.
Diesel Prices remained around Rs381–384 per litre during August 10–13 and jumped to Rs390.42 on August 17, diesel reached approximately Rs395.69 on August 18.
On August 19, HSD Diesel prcie was lowered to Rs363.06 per litre in major relief after refinery-related discussions. The relief was short-lived. Diesel subsequently increased to Rs364.70 and then reached Rs368.29 per litre by August 22.

Pakistan shifted toward daily petroleum pricing mechanism around July 2026, replacing the previous weekly revision system.
The mechanism is being managed by OGRA under the Petroleum Division and takes international oil-market movements into account through rolling averages of Platts Arab Gulf benchmarks. Other components, including domestic costs, taxes, petroleum levies and margins, are also incorporated into the final price.
The system was introduced amid exceptional volatility in global oil markets, with the US-Iran hostilities that began in late February 2026 contributing to concerns over international oil supplies.
Fuel prices have a direct impact on household budgets, but diesel movements carry an even wider economic impact. Transport companies, freight operators, farmers and logistics businesses rely heavily on HSD, meaning a sustained increase can push up transportation and production costs.
