BAGHDAD – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has dismissed a number of high-ranking officials responsible for security in the capital Baghdad, including the head of the city’s Operations Command after last weekend’s bombing that killed nearly 300 people and exposed the woeful inadequacy of emergency services and the security apparatus.
A statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday said three top officials in charge of Baghdad’s security were sacked after a bombing that killed nearly 300 people.
Claimed by ISIS, the bombing was the deadliest in Iraq since U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein 13 years ago.
Interior Minister Mohammed Ghabban resigned on Tuesday blaming the attack on a lack of communication between the multiple forces in charge of the capital’s security.
According to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 662 Iraqis were killed and another 1,457 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in June.
According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 382. Violence also claimed the lives of 280 members of the Iraqi security forces.
