KASHMIR – Three weeks after the killing of Burhan Wani – a Kashmiri pro-freedom insurgent leader – it has been reported that the deputy chief minister of occupied Kashmir termed the incident a mistake.
The statement of deputy CM Nirmal Singh surfaced on the back of violence in Kashmir that has claimed over 60 lives while a state-imposed curfew and other restrictions have entered their fourth week.
Nirmal Singh reportedly said that the troops were unaware of the presence of Wani at the encounter site.
“It was an accident as they did not know about his presence. The troops accidentally killed Wani. Had they been aware of his presence, they would have taken precautions,” said Singh.
Political foes of Nirmal took aim at him after his statement.
Sensing the heat, Nirmal Singh has now taken back his earlier statement, expressing that he never termed Wani’s killing as a mistake

He told ANI: “I was asked that state government had failed after the Burhan Wani killing, I was only explaining that it was a routine anti-terrorist op and suppose security personnel would have known (about Wani’s presence).”
