Taliban down Afghan army helicopter in Baghlan province

KABUL – The Taliban fighters have shot down an Afghan army helicopter in northern Baghlan province of the war torn country, the officials confirmed on Sunday morning.

The Mi-17 helicopter was providing logistics support to the ground forces fighting Taliban insurgents in Dand-e-Ghori area close to the provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri.

All of the people on board were killed, however, no number was given by the officials.

The Afghan National Army has launched a major offensive to retake the Dand-e-Ghori city from Taliban as the government believes that safe havens in the Baghlan province could be used by militants during  their spring offensive.

Taliban groups have established powerful shadow governments in many cities of Afghanistan northern provinces including Baghlan.

Recently, Taliban launched attacks on several new locations to expand their rule in the northern provinces including Kunduz. Afghan officials said forces have repelled Taliban in Kunduz city.
