Nawaz Sharif becomes first premier to appoint fifth military chief

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has emerged as the only premier of Pakistan, who would be appointing fifth military head in his political stint.

COAS General Raheel would be completing his term on November 29 and with that PM Nawaz would be making a choice regarding the next military head.

During his extended political career, Nawaz Sharif as Prime minister had appointed General Asif Nawaz Janjua in 1991. He also appointed Waheed Kakar in 1993 as military head.

Nawaz Sharif during his second tenure in 1998 assigned the post of COAS to general Pervez Musharraf however, he was ousted by the Musharraf in 1999.

Incumbent military head Raheel Sharif was also chosen by Nawaz Sharif in 2013 and with his retirement next week, PM Nawaz would be making choice for next military head, emerging as the only political leader in Pakistan to have appointed five military chiefs.
