Supreme Court halts working at three sugar mills of Sharif family

ISLAMABAD: On Thursday Supreme Court restrained sugarcane crushing in three sugar mills of Sharif family for seven days.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nasir while hearing the case issued the orders to halt working at Ittefaq Sugar Mill, Chaudhry Sugar Mill and Waqas Sugar Mill after a petition was filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jehangir Tareen’s DW Sugar Mill, challenging a stay order issued by the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The court also dismissed the stay order allowing crushing sugar-cane in the mills owned by the Sharif family.

Referring the case back to the LHC, the Chief Justice directed to form a bench to resume hearing of the case on coming Tuesday.

The Sharif family counsel Salman Akram Raja said that Shahbaz Sharif’s son Hamza Sharif was not part of the Ittefaq Sugar Mill anymore and it was owned by the Shafi family.
