Punjab govt sacks advocate who slapped cop outside NAB court

LAHORE – The Punjab government has removed Additional Advocate General Khawar Ikram Bhatti, who was caught on camera assaulting a police officer outside an accountability court in Islamabad.

According to a notification issued by Punjab Law Secretary Dr Syed Abul Hassan Najmi, “the competent authority… [has] dispensed with the services of [Bhatti] with immediate effect,” Dawn news reported.

Earlier, Justice Ebadur Rehman Lodhi had barred the accused advocate from appearing before the Lahore High Court. The judge said that a state lawyer should not possess such attitude as he has been appointed to serve the state not a political party.

On Saturday, a brawl erupted between the legal fraternity and forces when police officials barred non-essential persons, including lawyers from entering the court premises due to hearing of high profile corruption cases against members of Sharif family – Nawaz Sharif, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Captain (retd) Safdar.

Later, Inspector Shakeel Ahmed, who was assaulted, registered an FIR against Khawar Ikram Bhatta  for slapping and pushing him while he was performing duty.
