California teacher injures three in accidental firing amid gun safety course

MONTEREY – A teacher in US state of California accidentally discharged a firearm while teaching a public safety class, injuring three students at a Northern California school on Tuesday, police said.

Dennis Alexander, Seaside City’s mayor pro tem and a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department, was teaching a lesson at Seaside High School when he pointed his gun into the ceiling and accidentally fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, the city’s police chief.

Among the injured was a 17-year-old student who was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris that fell from the ceiling, however, fortunately, the injuries appeared superficial, as per police officials.

The teacher was suspended following the miscalculation, that could have wreaked havoc.

‘My son was hurt when bullet fragments lodged in his neck,’ said the father, Fermin Gonzales, of the student in a conversation with local TV station.

Gonzales continued that the incident changed his views about President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to arm teachers.

“I was kinda leaning toward having armed people in school in case something happened. After today, I get why people say there should be no guns in schools,” Gonzales added.

The Seaside Police Department released an official statement following the accidental discharge.

News of the incident spread further on Wednesday with school students across the country staging walkouts and demonstrations to protest against gun violence.

They called for a greater gun control in the wake of the massacre of 17 students in Florida a month ago, that had sent shock waves across the Trump-led America.

It is worth mentioning that as many as  17 people were killed and scores injured in a shooting at the Stoneman Douglas High School in the southeasternmost US state of Florida in February.

The attacker, who was arrested by Police in Parkland, was identified as former student of the school Nikolas Cruz, 19, who was expelled from school for disciplinary reasons.

President Trump sent out his own Tweet offering his “prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting”.
