Punjab govt withdraws local bodies amendments

ISLAMABAD – On the instructions of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the government of Punjab has withdrawn the (Local Bodies) amendments through an Ordinance, saying that this will enable the immediate completion of local bodies elections procedures. The announcement was made on Monday through a press release from the PM’s office.

According to the statement, he Prime Minister personally asked the Chief Minister of Punjab to monitor and manage the completion of the process. He also asked the CM to ensure that the local representatives elected by the masses were fully empowered in carrying out the duties of their specified offices.

They should likewise be given more authority through devolution to address local needs of common citizens, a press statement put out by the PM’s Office.

In the parliamentary procedure for immediate commencement of the process, the Advocate General of Punjab appeared before the honorable Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court and urged his court to declare the various petitions filed by different political parties as infructuous, once the amendments had been withdrawn.

The case has been fixed for August 3 for early hearing and disposal, the statement added.
