Arab woman sues father over his refusal to allow her to marry of her own choice

According to a report by the Khaleej Times, a woman from the UAE filed a lawsuit against her own father when due to certain family disputes, he refused to let her marry her fiance.

As per current UAE law, women of all ages need the consent of their fathers and male guardians in order to get married.  The 25-year-old took this step of filing a lawsuit with the Al Ain Personal Affairs Court after she was left with no choice.

Within the proceedings of the lawsuit, the woman contested that her father had only rejected the proposal since her parents were having a domestic dispute and her mother had consented to the marriage.

The complaint also featured an appeal to the judge to either grant her permission to marry or to replace her father as her legal guardian with another male relative.

In an interview to Khaleej Times, lawyer and legal adviser, Hassan Al Marzouqi, explained that many similar cases have already been registered in UAE courts with them being prevalent in several Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia.
