India unveils plans to bifurcate Jammu amp; Kashmir

NEW DELHI – The Narendra Modi-led BJP regime in India has proposed bifurcation of state of Jammu and Kashmir, defying the status of the disputed territory.

In a proposal forwarded on Monday by Home Minister, Amit Shah, Jammu and Kashmir would be made one Union Territory and Ladakh will be a separate Union Territory.

The proposal signed by Amit Shah says, “There has been a long pending demand of the people of Ladakh to give it the status of a Union Territory to enable them to realise their aspirations.”

According to the proposal, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be with the legislature, however, the Union Territory of Ladakh will be without legislature.

The proposal came amid repealing of Article 370 of the constitution of India which grants special status to Kashmir.

India has deployed additional forces to the restive valley besides suspending internet service and putting top leaders including former chief minister Omar Abdullah under house arrest.
