TBILISI – A mass shooting incident occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, with nine others injured.
The victims include 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. The suspected shooter, Colt Gray, 14, has been taken into custody and will face homicide charges.
Colt Gray was previously grilled by police after threats of a school shooting made last year, but no arrest was made due to lack of evidence.
The weapon used in the shooting was identified as an AR-15-style rifle. This incident is the deadliest school shooting of 2024 and is part of a troubling trend, with this being the 45th school shooting this year.
After the horrific incident, Apalachee High School and other schools in the district were placed on lockdown. A prior threat had warned of attacks at multiple schools, with Apalachee High being the initial target.
Further investigations continued and schools in the area will be closed for the remainder of the week, per reports in international media.
