Neither consulted, nor informed : Top US diplomat on India s Kashmir move

WASHINGTON – United States Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, Alice Wells has denied that India had informed the United States before revoking the special status granted to occupied Kashmir.

In a brief tweet on Wednesday, the SCA account attributed to Wells mentioned that the Indian government neither consulted nor informed the US government before it revoked the status of the restive valley.

Alice Wells, along with a high-level US delegation arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday, to hold talks with the Pakistani leadership.

The remarks came a day after the BJP-led Indian government rushed through a presidential decree to abolish Article 370 of the Constitution that grants special status to Indian occupied Kashmir.

Earlier, the US Department of State had said it was closely following the events in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has decided to downgrade its ties with India besides suspension of trade; Islamabad has also decided to expel Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria to register a strong protest against the move declared unilateral and reckless by the top civil-military body.
