Polio worker sexually assaulted, robbed in Jacobabad

JACOBABAD – A female polio worker was allegedly sexually assaulted and looted by an armed man in Jacobabad, a city in Pakistani province of Sindh.

The incident occurred in the village of Allah Bakhsh Jakhrani as vaccination drive is underway across the country to immunize children below age five years.

During a press conference, Deputy Commissioner Zahoor Mari and SSP Sameer Noor Channa said that the main suspect has been arrested. The DNA samples of the female polio worker have also been sent to Jamshoro.

Authorities have stated that based on the woman’s initial statement, a robbery case was filed, and the charge of assault will be added to this case.

The deputy commissioner said that the woman was initially hesitant to report the sexual assault due to the tribal society’s norms, but she later gave her statement about the assault in court.

It is recalled that a week-long special anti-polio vaccination drive, which was launched on September 9, is underway across the country.

During the campaign, children up to five years of age are being administered anti-polio vaccine drops.

The drive aims to vaccinate 30 million children across 115 districts of the country.
