WASHINGTON – The United States condemns the “heinous” deadly attack on the Indian paramilitary police convoy in the Asian country’s state of Jammu and Kashmir, the White House said.
On Thursday, a bomb hit the convoy, going to the Pulwama district, and killed at least 44 officers of India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and wounding at least 44 others.
“We express our deep condolences to the victims’ families, the Indian government, and the Indian people for the loss of life in this brutal attack,” the White House said in a statement.
The attack boosted the US commitment to increase its counterterrorism cooperation with India, according to the statement.

The Indian authorities have repeatedly accused Islamabad of supporting separatists in the area. Particularly, Indian Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh said after the attack that Jaish-e-Mohammad, a group of Kashmiri freedom fighters, was backed by Pakistan.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry, in its turn, denied claims it had something to do with the attack.

Jammu and Kashmir is a region that has been disputed by India and Pakistan since 1947 when both countries gained independence from the British Empire. The two countries have gone through three wars over the region, but the conflict has not been resolved. The unstable situation in the region has led to the emergence of extremist groups.
