The Stanford assault case has led to some important discussions about race, privilege and sexual assault lately. The perpetrator was sentenced very lightly.
‘Only six months of prison is not a sentence fair enough for a crime like rape,’ said a public stance on the issue.
Aaron Persky, the judge who handed out the light sentence, has become the focus of the US public’s rage. A massive campaign was recently launched against him, seeking his removal. A petition against him was also shared on the internet and now has more than a million signatures.
He was also removed from another assault case yesterday by the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office.
The office claims to lack confidence in the judge.
“We highly doubt that Judge Persky can fairly participate in this upcoming hearing. Hereby, we use our legal right to ask for another judge to ensure public safety and pursue justice,” the Attorney’s office said.
