Kashmiri third-grader invents word counting pen

SRINAGAR – A nine-year-old boy from Gurez valley in Indian occupied Kashmir has invented a ‘counting pen’ that can produce word count in a written form.

The casing of the pen is attached to its back end; when someone starts writing, it keeps a track of the word count, which is displayed on a small LCD monitor attached to it, said Muzaffar Ahmad Khan, the little innovator.

According to Muzaffar, who is a third-grade student, said the idea of devising such pen came to his mind after he scored poorly on a recent exam.

“In my last exam, I got minimum marks as I wrote fewer words. It made me restless and that was the moment when I started thinking of inventing something which can save my time and finally ‘counting pen’ struck my mind”, he added.

The first version of the pen has been displayed at the Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, organised by National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan (official home of the president) in New Delhi.

The pen will help students ace their exams especially when they have to maintain a word count of essays and long-form questions.

According to Muzaffar, the pen will be available in the market in May as the NIF has already decided to make it commercially available.
