Here are the ten key facts every Twitter fan need to know:
1- Founders
Twitter was founded by technology experts Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass at the platform of company named Odeo, which then had only 14 employees.
2- The original idea behind creation of Twitter:
The real thought behind creation of this micro-blogging network was “pod-casting of SMS to any network.” It means that the Twitter we see today has reached this position by a number of conversions.
3-Why was it named Twitter?
Many of us would have thought that Twitter was the first name for this network as it is a proper English dictionary word -meaning repeated sounds of chirps related to birds. But in fact it did not happen so plainly.
Developers first selected name “twitch” -which is related to phones vibration- for their proposed platform, but during research about word twitch, they came across the word Twitter, which was perfect for the network.
4- Twitter’s short code 40404 was also not first thought:
Just like basic idea of Twitter’s creation and its name the short code 40404 used for this network was also something else in the beginning.
Initially the founders selected “10958” as a short code for their network but latter changed it to current short code “40404.” And there was no drama behind selection of this code except the thought that it was easy to remember.
5- Why does it use 140 characters?
The basic idea that behind Twitter’s creation was SMS -which consists of 160 characters. That is why Twitter lets users utilise 140 characters and reserves remaining 20 characters for user name and unique URLs used in the tweet.
6- First Tweet:
The first tweet sent using this network was “just setting up my twttr” -the same that Twitter suggests every new user to post as his maiden tweet.
The tweet was published by founder Jack Dorsey on March 21, 2006at 9:50 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST).
7- Twitter Birthday Controversy:
Although Twitter is celebrating its birthday on March 21, it is a matter of fact that the network was first introduced for users in July 15, 2006.
So it still remains a question if the birthday should be marked on date of official release or the day when first successful tweet was posted.
8- Twitter, from a company’s internal service to globally known tech giant:
Twitter started working as Odeo’s internal service on March 21, 2006 and was introduced for users on July 15, 2006. The service gained first major boost in December 2006 during an earthquake in San Francisco, United States when thousands of people used Twitter for first time.
In 2012 Twitter users crossed landmark number of 100 million, who were sending 340 million tweets and 1.6 billion searches per day. In the next year, 2013, Twitter was included in world’s ten most used websites.
Latest information suggests that Twitter has over 500 million users worldwide and over 332 million of them are active users.
9- Twitter’s Worth:
As of fiscal year 2015-end Twitter’s net revenue stands at US$2.21 billion while the net profit from all sources of the network was recorded to be US$521 million.
The company has a headquarter in San Francisco and it has regional offices in another 25 location worldwide. Twitter has 3,638 permanent employees around the globe.
10- Twitter in 2016:
Twitter -which once allowed only 140 characters podcast- has become a network with immense features in 2016. It now allows users to post picture and GIFs as well. Meanwhile users can also upload videos while live broadcast is also possible via third party coordination such as Periscope. Twitter has also introduced Polls feature to compete with other competitors like reddit and facebook.
In the recent times Twitter has also started promoted tweets/trends to attract corporate sector to use the network for advertisements. It has also introduced Twitter Analytics where users get information about their most effective tweets and their potential interactions.
Live segregation of tweets based on the contents is just another significant feature that lets user get the latest information via Twitter.
