Angry mob torches Ahmadiyya factory, worship place in Jhelum over blasphemy

LAHORE (Web Desk) – An Ahmadiyya place of worship has been set ablaze  in Jhelum, a day after an angry mob torched a factory owned by members of the Ahmadiyya community in the same area over alleged desecration of holy Quran.

Hundreds of people encircled a chipboard factory located in Jehlum city on Friday, alleging that a factory employee had desecrated a copy of holy Quran.

Local clerics made provocative speeches against Ahmadis, causing the enraged mob to resort to violence.

According to Express Tribune, many workers ran away from the factory complex which contained a residential area, with their families. According to reports, some workers were inside the factory when it was set afire.

Senior police officer in Jhelum, Adnan Malik said:” The incident occurred after police arrested security head of the factory, Qamar Ahmed Tahir, for complaints that he had ordered the burning of holy Quran.”

Later, angry mob blocked the GT Road and the police were unable to disperse the protesters. Rangers had to be called in for assisting police to disperse the crowd.

Three members of Ahmadiyya community have been detained by the police.

A spokesperson for Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya confirmed three Ahmadis were nabbed by the police, without assigning any reason.
