ISLAMABAD – The second phase of the sixth population census will begin today (Tuesday) in 88 districts of the country.
The first phase of the census covered 63 districts and it was completed in mid-April.
The second phase, expected to continue until the 24th of May, includes 21 districts each in Punjab and Sindh, 17 in Balochistan, 12 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 6 in FATA, 5 each in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and the Islamabad Federal Capital Territory.

Chief Census Commissioner Asif Bajwa told the newsmen on Monday that like the first phase of the census, the second phase would also be completed in a successful manner.
“International independent observers had termed the census process satisfactory,” Bajwa said and added that observers had not pointed out any major flaw in the exercise.

When asked about the census in Fata, Bajwa said the government had carried out the exercise only in Orakzai agency in Fata during the first phase.
“Census would be conducted in other six agencies during the upcoming second phase. The PBS is all set for conducting second and last phase of the census, which would start from April 25 to May 25,” he said.

He said that house listing operation would continue for three days (April 25 to April 27) for the first block under the second phase.
The services of 84,000 enumerators are being utilised in collecting the data from about 168,120 census blocks across the country.
The Bureau has reserved about ten percent staff and supervisors, bringing the total staff for census to over 118,000 persons, the largest ever.
In addition to enumerators, 200,000 army personnel have also been engaged in the exercise.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan, transgenders will also be counted in the census, while the board would also conduct a survey later for identification of count and the nature of their disability.
A helpline 0800-57574 has also been set up for queries about the census process.
The last census in Pakistan was conducted in 1998 during the stint of Nawaz Sharif.
