Pakistan will forever be remembered as Champions

LAHORE – The Champions Trophy will now no longer be a 50-over-tournament but a full-fledged World T20 event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided this week.

This means the reigning champion Pakistan will not be defending the Champions Trophy won last year against India.

ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson said the global body has “unanimously agreed” that the 2021 meet in India would now be a 16-team event in the shortest format.

“In all likelihood, the 2021 Champions Trophy will be a World T20,” according to the ICC CEO.

It was reported earlier that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would resist any attempt from the ICC to scrap the 2021 Champions Trophy in India, replacing it with a World T20 instead.

The BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry said that doing away with Champions Trophy would result in a loss of approximately $30 million to BCCI coffers.

The World T20 in 2020 will be held in Australia and the World T20 in 2021 will be held in India.
