JEDDAH – Saudi women and children attended the ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’ event of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for the first time in the conservative country’s history.
WWE’s event featured seven championship matches, high profile rematches and the largest Royal Rumble match in history with 50 male participants.
More than 50,000 people were gathered to watch the event, which starred John Cena and others, held at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah.
It’s all part of a series of social reforms pushed by the kingdom’s assertive 32-year-old Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
Last month, the wrestling giant signed a 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia. The deal comes at a time when the kingdom is opening up entertainment to foreign brands and also changing some long-standing laws.
A previous WWE event held in the ultraconservative kingdom in 2014 was for men only.
Earlier this month, first cinema was opened by US-based firm AMC nearly after 40-years.
