Poor Indian response fails Pakistani premier’s desire for good relations

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who is said to be a strong proponent of improving ties with India appears to be disappointed at Indian response to Pakistan’s desire for good relations.

The premier, in an interview, went on to say that India has failed to respond the Pakistani gestures properly.

Sharif made improving relations with India a priority when he swept to power for a third time in a 2013 election.

He paid visit to New Delhi on the invitation newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend his oath taking ceremony. His visit had earned him a bad name in anti-Indian circles of the country, however.

Sharif said his acceptance of an invitation last May to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration was “an exceptional decision”.

But months later, India withdrew from talks after Pakistan’s ambassador in India met Indian Kashmiri separatist politicians.

Sharif said that was a “frivolous pretext”.

“There is no sign of India desiring resumption of dialogue with us,” he said.

Sharif said Pakistan was ready for “constructive dialogue for negotiated settlement of all issues, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir”.

Indian secretary for foreign affairs had visited Pakistan when he took over the position and took a roam to visit the SAARC countries in March thi9s year.

Both countries did talk about bilateral ties on the occasion but failed to resume the composite dialogue officially.
