Several dead in Moscow as severe storm causes havoc

MOSCOW – A heavy storm that hit the Russian capital on Monday has left a number of people dead, the Investigative Committee confirmed. The Moscow mayor said that dozens required medical treatment. The storm uprooted trees and tore the roofs off buildings.

“People were killed and injured as a result of a storm in Moscow and Moscow Region. At the moment, we’re aware of eight fatalities. The exact number of casualties and the amount of damage caused is being verified,” Svetlana Petrenko, Russia’s Investigative Committee spokeswoman, told Tass.

Seven people have died in the capital, with another victim being an 11-year-old girl in the Ramenskoye District of Moscow Region, she added.

“There are casualties as a result of the storm, more than 40 people applied for medical attention. My condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those who died,” Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin tweeted.

The mayor added that the authorities were taking the necessary measures to deal with aftermath of the disaster.
