PLM-N demands judicial inquiry into poll rigging

LAHORE – Former ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the alleged rigging in general elections 2018.

The PML-N emerged as the biggest party in Punjab after elections, party president Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday.

Sharif alleged that the election was rigged and his party will strongly protest the results in the National Assembly.

The party’s leadership met in Lahore to discuss strategy in the aftermath of July 25 elections and decided to present their reservations and proposals at a multi-party conference on Monday.

Khawaja Asif said the PML-N wanted a judicial commission comprising of non-PCO judges.

The former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal said PML-N would decide on oath-taking after consultations with major opposition parties.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) held an All Parties Conference (APC) in Islamabad demanding a “transparent” re-election.

Attended by leaders of various parties, the APC was chaired by PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) president Maulana Fazlur Rehman. It was held at the Islamabad residence of MMA leader Mian Aslam.

“People have been robbed of their mandate,” Fazlur Rehman said, added, “people claiming victory in the elections, we reject their claims as well.”

He remarked: “We want democracy. We have sacrificed so much for democracy to prosper in the country.” People who think they have won fairly should know that they have no real power, he said.

He further said that they will organise protest demonstrations in different parts of the country till elections are held again.
