ACCRA (APP) – A cargo plane operated by Ethiopian Airlines skidded off the tarmac on landing in Ghana’s capital, Accra, on Saturday, the airports authority said.
The Ghana Airports Company Ltd (GACL) said in a statement that the incident happened at 11:05 am (1105 GMT) and involved a flight, ET AQV, travelling from the Togolese capital, Lome.
“The crew of three people on board the aircraft all survived the accident and are currently responding to treatment at 37 Military Hospital,” it added. Operations at the airport were unaffected and flights were operating on schedule, the statement said.
Emergency teams including the fire service, police, military and civil aviation authority were sent to the scene. “The cause of the accident is still unknown,” GCAL said. Local media reports, however, said there was bad weather at the time caused by seasonal winds, which may have restricted visibility. The plane was said to be a Boeing 737. Photographs on social media showed the jet with damage to its nose section, while the landing gear appeared to have buckled and at least one engine sheared off.
