LAHORE- Model Rubab Ali has joined the bandwagon of stars protesting against the Lux Style Awards (LSA) by either rejecting their nominations or simply dropping out of the ceremony.
“I encourage everyone reading this (nominated, interested or a fan) to speak up against sexual harassment in our society,” she said as she announced her decision on social media.
“I’ve been in this industry for 8 years and it makes me sick in my stomach to see the kind of casual harassment and inappropriate behaviour towards women that gets excused in the name of social ‘norms’,” said Rubbab.
She added, “LSA [has] the right to nominate whoever they deem appropriate – but as artists and public figures we also have a responsibility to speak up against those who perpetuate injustices against women.
“And finally – we have to support each other. If you are reading this and have your own sexual harassment story to tell – please speak up! We cannot sit back and just watch. Nothing changes until you stand up for yourself and those around you.”
Rubbab is the seventh nominee to drop out from the LSA race this year in protest of the inclusion of an alleged sexual harasser in the nominations. Other nominees who have asked to withdraw their nominations include model Eman Suleman, clothing brand Generation, makeup artist Saima Bargfrede, singer Meesha Shafi, folk rock band The Sketches, renowned film director Jami and makeup artist Fatima Nasir.
Things are certainly heating up. With so many nominations counting themselves out of the award show, would the Lux Style awards still continue this year? Comment below to share your thoughts with us and stay tuned for more updates!
