KARACHI – The Sindh government has announced that it will be enforcing a blanket ban on plastic bags throughout the province with effect from October 1.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, spokesperson for the Government of Sindh, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said there will be a complete ban on the sale, manufacturing and use of plastic bags in the province.
The PPP leader said that that the decision had been taken by the provincial environment department.
The official recalled that the use of plastic bags had previously been banned by the provincial government, and the government was merely implementing the decision throughout Sindh.
The Sindh government had on March 21 last year, imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, sale and purchase of plastic bags across the province under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The Sindh cabinet had decided to reimpose a phase-wise ban on the use of polythene and plastic bags in the province; Sukkur was selected to implement the ban first.
In his media interaction, Wahab warned that after the Oct 1 deadline, violators of the ban will face legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in a video message urged the public to avoid plastic bags, highlighting that they are a major pollutant.
The plastic bags are also being banned in different parts of the country with Islamabad to implement the ban from August 14 onward.
