IHC bars ECP from deciding PTI foreign funding case in 30 days

ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended a ruling of its single-bench directing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to decide a long-pending foreign funding case against the PTI within 30 days.

A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued the order that has suspended Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani’s order to the top election body.

The high court has issued the ruling on a petition filed by the PTI leader Amir Kayani through his counsel Shah Khawar on Saturday, accusing ECP of showing “biased attitude” in the PTI funding case. He had made 17 political parties respondents in the petition.

During the hearing, Khawar argued that the Justice Mohsin used strong words like “face the music” in the verdict, adding that the single-bench had no authority to direct ECP to wrap up the case in 30 days.

He also informed the court that PTI wanted that funding cases of all political parties should be concluded during the same period.

Suspending the single-bench order, IHC has sought reply from ECP and 17 political parties by May 17.

It also issued notices to ECP and Akbar S Babar in PTI’s intra-court appeal.
