Two children killed after playing with hand grenade in Swat

SWAT – Two children were killed and another critically wounded in an accidental grenade explosion in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday.

They were playing in the mountainous area of Swat Valley when they found the hand grenade and accidentally set it off.

The two brothers, aged nine and 10, died, while their seven-year-old female cousin is in critical condition.

Nearly three years ago, six children playing in a field in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were killed when a hand grenade they mistook for a toy exploded. The two girls and four boys were between ages seven and 12. Another child was injured.

The incident occurred in 2014 in Babar Mela, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) southwest of Hangu.

In the beginning of 2007, Taliban militants led by Maulana Fazlullah, now central chief of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took control of the Swat district and waged a campaign of attacking schools, killing policemen, and beheading opponents.

The village, where this terrible incident happened, is close to the Swat Valley, where 30,000 troops of Pakistan army took control of the mountainous area from the militants.

Fazlullah fled to Afghanistan during the offensive. In 2012, the Taliban targeted schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai – now a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
