BAGHDAD (Web Desk) – Islamic State militants on Friday hoisted their black flag over the local government building in Ramadi city of Iraq and made announcements of victory through mosque loudspeakers.
The fighters attacked the city overnight using six suicide bombers and reached the city center to take over the governorate building, according to media reports.
Intensive fight continued in the several parts of Ramadi throughout the day, however, most of the areas still remain under the control of Iraqi forces.
Ramadi, if fell to Islamic State, would be the greatest strategic blow to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s government following the success against the militants in Tikrit only six weeks ago.
