Citizen reports getting counterfeit currency notes from ATM in Karachi

Karachi – A citizen reports that he has received counterfeit currency notes from ATM at Karachi Airport, on Sunday.

According to Sarmad Hussain, he withdrew some amount from the UBL ATM at Karachi Airport and received a fake currency note. He went to talk to the bank, told them about the issue but the bank refused to change it back.

This isn’t the first incident of its kind. ATM users in the past have complained about ATM’s giving out fake currency notes. In 2016, a person uploaded a video on YouTube claiming the same. He complained about it but the bank refused to accept his claim.

According to a bank official, there are no sensors or detectors at ATM machines to verify the currency notes. Thus, it might be possible that the banks are unknowing  participants in the circulation of fake currency notes.

After these reports emerged the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had asked banks to increase security measures to avoid delivery of bogus currency notes. However, the emergence of such reports every now and then is worrisome.

In March 2017, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) apprehended two suspects, Wasim and Nasir, for running a fake currency swindle in Pakistan and millions of rupees in the form of counterfeit notes were recovered from them.

During the investigation, the suspects revealed that counterfeit notes are being brought from India and Afghanistan.
