KABUL – At least five security personnel were killed and ten others wounded on Monday in a terrorist attack on a military academy in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.
Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack on a battalion of Afghan Army near the Marshal Fahim National Defense University, where high-ranking officials are trained.
Defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said a suicide bomber first detonated himself near the post outside the academy and three other terrorists were killed during the fierce gun battle. He added that one of the terrorists has been arrested alive.
The spokesperson said that the attackers wanted to enter the heavily fortified academy.
There are various institutions inside the university for armed forces, including National Military Academy of Afghanistan (NMAA), the Afghan National Army Officer Academy (ANAOA), and others.
