KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian police have seized dozens of bags stuffed with jewelry, cash and luxury items from properties linked to former Prime Minister Najib Razak.

According to media reports, 72 bags of jewelry, cash in a variety of currencies, almost 300 boxes of designer handbags, and other luxury goods were seized in a raid Wednesday night.

Mr. Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, are at the center of a scandal over an estimated $7.5 billion that went missing from a government investment fund, Malaysia  Development Berhad, which he (Najib) oversaw.

Authorities said that $731 million from the fund was deposited in Mr. Najib’s personal bank account.

Earlier,  former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak had been barred from leaving the country due to corruption cases against him.

Mahathir Mohamad assumed the charge of Malaysia’s seventh prime minister on May 10 after defeating Najib Razak, earning the title of world’s oldest leader, after a shock victory in recent polls.

The 92-year-old leader was sworn in by country’s constitutional ruler, King Muhammad V, after the opposition ousted Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, surprising the political commentators across the globe.

Mahathir asserted that there would be a thorough investigation into cases of alleged corruption including the one involving the state investment fund.

Interestingly, Mahathir Mohamad was once leading Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and ruled the country for 22 years, from 1981 to 2003, however, he defected to the opposition to confront former fellow Najib Razak.
