PARIS – Spanish tennis genius Rafael Nadal clinched an 11th French Open against Dominic Thiem on Sunday to take his majors total to 17.
Nadal trounced the rival by a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory before the triumph reduced him to victory at the Roland Garros stadium.
The Spanish player is the only second player in history to win the same Grand Slam on 11 occasions after Margaret Court, who won 11 Australian Open titles between 1960 and 1973.
The victory made Nadal humble who expressed that he had no desire to become locked into an arms race with Roger Federer to surpass his great rival’s 20 Grand Slam titles.
Currently, Nadal is three victories shy of the titles clinched by Federer, who is four years older than him.
“I have never been crazy about this kind of stuff, you can’t always be frustrated if somebody has more money than you, a bigger house than you, if somebody has more Grand Slams than you,’ he said.
“Of course I would love to have 20 like Roger in the future or even more but it´s not something that is on my mind,” the star added.
