Man kills mother and sister in Paris knife attack

PARIS – A man killed his mother and sister and wounded a third person on a street in a Paris suburb before being killed by police.

French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said the incident was not currently being treated as a terror attack.

Speaking in the south-western suburb of Trappes where the incident took place, Collomb said the attacker appeared to have had “significant psychiatric problems”.

“The individual has been neutralized. My first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones,” the interior minister wrote on his twitter account.

He added police “are investigating to establish the circumstances of this tragedy.”

He further said the man had been known to police for expressing extremist views, but was “unstable” and “not someone who could respond to instructions from a terrorist group”.

The so-called ‘Islamic State’ terrorist group claimed it was behind the attack but offered no proof.

According to news channel BFMTV, the man would have killed his mother and sister in the assault which may be treated as family dispute.

The knife attacker was shot dead by police while he got out from a home where he had been hidden and menaced officers, it added.

“Operation is over… The individual neutralized and died. Death toll: two dead and one seriously wounded,” tweeted Les Yvelines prefect.

The man, born in 1982, has already been on service intelligence radar for radicalisation and apologia for terrorism.

France has been on constant alert for terrorist attacks since the Paris attacks of 2015.

Trappes, close to Versailles, is known for gang violence and poverty.
