Transgender person murdered in Swabi

PESHAWAR – At least one transgender woman was killed on Monday when unknown assailants opened fire at an event in Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The tragic incident took place near Shewa Adda spot, where most of the community members gather frequently. The motive of the killing is still unknown.

Kalu Khan Station House Officer (SHO), Shafiur Rehman confirmed the incident while the body of the deceased transgender identified as Khan Ullah alias Sheena was sent to the hospital for postmortem.

The suspects fled after opening fire; police said a first information report (FIR) had been registered against unidentified assailants and a search operation had been launched to nab them.

Transgender individuals are frequently attacked in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with the highest number of cases reported from the provincial capital, Peshawar followed by Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, Swat, and Bannu.

According to rights group ‘Trans Action Alliance’, 53 cases of violence against transgender individuals were reported in KPK alone in 2018.

A total of 1,131 cases of violence against transgender persons were reported in K-P over 2015-17, of these, 55 were killed.
