Syed Ali Geelani, true fighter for Kashmiri rights, remembered on death anniversary

SRINAGAR – The third anniversary of Syed Ali Geelani is being observed today on September 1, as Kashmiris paid tribute to man who fought for their freedom.

Gieelani, a key figure in Kashmiri independence movement, spent big part of his life to advocating for the cause.

On his death anniversary, special events including rallies, processions, demonstrations, and seminars are planned to honor his legacy.

The prominent Kashmiri leader was earlier honored with Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest civilian award in Pakistan, for his lifelong advocacy for Kashmiri self-determination.

Geelani was deeply involved with Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) before partition and became a key figure in Kashmiri politics. Despite numerous arrests and health issues, he remained a leading voice for Kashmiri independence, founding the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and later Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

His legacy includes a strong commitment to Kashmir’s self-determination and resistance against Indian policies, including the revocation of Kashmir’s special status in 2019.
