WASHINGTON (News Desk) – As the United States presidential race has entered a rather formal phase now, Senator Ted Cruz Tuesday beat businessman Donald Trump in Iowa presidential contest for Republican nomination while Democrat’s Hillary Clinton managed very thin lead against Bernie Sanders.
According to US media reports, the Texas based lawmaker Ted Cruz gained 28% votes. On the other hand Donald Trump, who earned much media coverage due his ‘weird stances’ on different issues, gained 24% votes compared to 23% votes of Senator Marco Rubio.
On the Democratic side, the contest largely remained between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, where third candidate Martin O’Malley could bag below 1% votes. Clinton clinched thin lead by getting 50% of votes followed by Bernie Sanders’ 49% votes.
Following the announcement of results Republican candidate Ted Cruz called his victory a good news for grass-root level conservatives. Donald Trump conceded his defeat and said “I am honored to be second in the poll.”
Hillary Clinton termed her close fight with Sanders as “a good competition of sound ideas” whereas the third candidate Martin O’Malley called off his election campaign following the depressing result.
