WhatsApp becomes first third-party app on Apple s CarPlay

CALIFORNIA – Smart messaging application WhatsApp is now supported by Apple’s automotive platform CarPlay. The app has become the first non-Apple messaging app to enter the CarPlay universe.

WhatsApp’s latest version 2.18.20 will automatically show up as an app when your iPhone is connected to CarPlay. It’ll work like any other messaging app due to Apple’s strict rules for CarPlay messaging apps, reported iCulture.

The CarPlay app for WhatsApp will be badged with the number of new unread messages. Notifications appear onscreen with the name of the sender; users can tap to hear Siri speak the contents of the message. WhatsApp also appears in the multitasking bar in the CarPlay sidebar, in the slot for messaging and phone apps. This allows users to quickly switch between tasks whilst driving.

According to iCulture, the only real difference between the WhatsApp implementation and Apple’s own iMessage app is that WhatsApp lacks the ability to scroll through a list of message threads.

CarPlay is a technology being built into many new cars (aftermarket solutions available) to bring the essential parts of the iPhone experience to the in-car display. It allows drivers to use features like phone calls, messaging, music and Siri safely.

The new update is available now on iOS devices.
