SC moved against Asia Bibi s acquittal in blasphemy case

LAHORE – Amid ongoing protests by a religious part, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking review of a verdict pertaining to the acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman facing death sentence over blasphemy charges.

The appeal has been filed by lawyers on the behalf of Qari Salam, who had registered the original blasphemy case against the accused some eight years ago, in apex court’s Lahore Registry.

The petition argues that the Chrisitan woman admitted her crime during the investigation, adding that a delay in filing the First Information Request (FIR) against the accused does not mean that she is innocent.

The petition further pleaded the court to put the name of Bibi on the Exit Control List (ECL) until a decision is made over the review petition.

Earlier this week, a three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar overturned the death sentence of Bibi, acquitting her the charges of blasphemy.

The decision sparked country-wide protests causing massive traffic jams in major cities including Lahore, Karachi, twin cities and others.

It is the second that all educational institutions are closed in Punjab, Islamabad, while in Sindh and KP the private schools to remain closed.

An official team comprising PTI ministers held a meeting with the TLP leadership in order to woo them to end the protests but the effort yielded no results as the agitators do not ready to retreat from their demand.
