Nokia revives 2000s nostalgia with the launch of Barbie-themed flip phone

Nokia barbie themed phone

HELSINKI – Nokia has brought back a wave of nostalgia with the launch of a Barbie-branded flip phone, blending the charm of the early 2000s with a modern twist.

Priced at $130 (over 36,000 PKR), this pink Nokia flip phone is a nod to the simpler times before smartphones took over, aiming to captivate both Millennials and Gen Z users who cherish those memories. With its classic flip design, 0.3-megapixel camera, flash torch, Barbie-themed back cover, stickers, and a pastel beaded phone strap, it’s a delightful throwback to the days when phones were as much about style as functionality.

This collaboration between HMD Global, the current producer of Nokia phones, and Mattel, the creator of Barbie, taps into the fond memories of keypad phones that were once a staple for Millennials. The Barbie-themed phone, set to sell 400,000 units in the UK this year, is designed for those who want to escape the constant connectivity of today’s smartphones.

The phone’s lack of internet connectivity resonates with the growing trend of digital detox, particularly among younger users who are increasingly aware of the need to limit the negative effects of social media. By bringing back the flip phone in this nostalgic form, Nokia offers a refreshing alternative for those who miss the charm of simpler times.
