Dubai s Torch Tower blaze brought under control

DUBAI – A large fire that ripped through a residential skyscraper ‘Torch Tower’ in Dubai last night was brought under control.

The 352m high, 84-story building tucked at the heart of the luxury Dubai Marina area caught fire on Thursday putting at risk lives of hundreds of foreigners residing in the area.

A video taken at the scene shows the fire spreading upwards – sending burning debris spiralling down and sparking a blaze in the streets below.

Dubai police commander-in-chief Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri disclosed that the fire started on the 63rd floor.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported and the vigilant firefighters managed to control the blaze within two hours, at 2:58 am, and started the cooling process in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Dubai Media Office posted a video showing the extent of damage.

A fire swept through the same building in February 2015 and its flammable cladding was blamed for the rapid spread of the flames, the reason that led to London’s Grenfell’s fire.
