KARACHI – Pakistan Customs on Friday foiled a smuggling bid of goods including cell phones worth nearly Rs284 million in the Sindh capital.
The Customs officials took action after the Model Custom Collectorate of Preventive, Karachi received credible information to effect that some reputable importers are involved in misusing the facility of Green Channel under ‘WeBOC system’ and clearing their goods from Karachi by grossly mis-declaring description as LED lights and bulbs.
“In wake of the information and on the directives of the Chief Collector of Customs (enforcement) South, Karachi, the Collector of Customs (Preventive), Karachi constituted a team to thwart such attempts,” Collector of customs Dr Iftikhar Ahmed said while speaking at a press conference while being flanked with additional collector Amir Thahim and deputy collector Muhammad Faisal Khan.
“The team after strict vigilance successfully intercepted a 40 feet container loaded on a trawler near mobile market in Saddar neighbourhood,” he told the media.
As a result, huge quantity of goods worth Rs284 million tabulated below valuing Rs284 million approximately were recovered and seized which included Q-Mobile quantity 27,200 value amount to Rs136,000,000, assorted mobile quantity 35,790 worth nearly Rs143,160,000, 531 Amazon Tablets worth Rs5,310,000.
The officer further said that the smuggled items were brought into the country without payment of livable duty and taxes.
The container, laden on a vehicle, was escorted to Anti-Smuggling headquarters for stocktaking.
An FIR No. 226/2017 has been lodged while further investigation is underway.
