KABUL – Afghan forces Tuesday regained control of key locations in Nawa district of southern Helmand province after intense fight with Taliban fighters, the media reports said.
The district had fallen to Taliban insurgents on Monday morning when the police chief was gunned down and the remaining Afghan troops seemed to be helpless against the attackers.
Reports said the sounds of heavy gunfire and exchange of artillery were still coming from some parts of the district, while Taliban have not yet confirmed the loss in Nawa.
The district of Nawa which was taken over by Afghan forces as a result of a major assault earlier last year.
Afghan Interior Ministry said that Taliban attack was also repelled in Kunduz city, where the insurgents had attacked from four different sides. Taliban have been pushed away from all significant location of the city, a statement released on Tuesday morning added.
Taliban fighters are also mounting their efforts to gain control of Lashkar Gah city of Helmand province. There are reports of high-degree assaults in Uruzgan as well.
The Taliban assaults came at a time when Afghanistan’s international allies are set to begin a two-day conference in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday. Kabul is expecting a formal approval of billions of dollars in aid for Afghanistan during the summit.
