LAHORE – New Zealand defeated Pakistan in first one day international of five-match series by 61 runs, in Wellington on Saturday (today) under the Duckworth–Lewis method.
Pakistan had scored 166 runs at a loss of six wickets against a staggering target of 316 runs when rain interrupted play during the 31st over of the game, compelling officials to go for D/L method.
Earlier, Pakistani skipper Sarfaraz Ahmad won the toss and elected to field first against New Zealand.
Kiwis made 315 runs in its innings with Kane Williamson scoring 115 besides the openers who gave a fine start to the Black Caps.
Chasing the target, Pakistan lost early wickets with Azhar (6), Babar Azam (0), Mohammad Hafeez (1) and Shoaib Malik contribution 13 to the total.
As the first five players went back to the pavilion within 16 overs, opener Fakhar Zaman retained the crease fort and was at 82 runs when rain set in.
For Kiwis, Tim Southee took three wickets for 22 while Trent Boult showed the door to two Pakistani players.
The Champions Trophy 2017 winners are heading into the series with a winning streak of nine consecutive games, and Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmad is hopeful his team will continue the momentum.
I have a lot of faith in my players and we have continued the same team with just one or two changes to give them a proper chance and make a good lineup,” Sarfraz said in a press conference ahead of the first match.
