LAHORE (Ali Zain) – “My watch has ended,” said Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, walking away to conclude the third episode of Game of Thrones Season 6, Oathbreaker. But, given the rules of Night’s Watch, every deserter must be punished with death, and hence at the end of the episode a question must have arisen in every fans mind: Has Jon Snow really broken his oath and fallen into disgrace?
However, looking at the Night’s Watch oath, which reads “Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come,” we find that Snow is not an oathbreaker.
Here we explain how:
Given that the Night’s Watch oath contains the line, “It shall not end until my death,”, it’s pretty obvious that Snow has, in fact, not broken his oath since he died at his post at the end of Season 5.
This wasn’t the first time in GoT that Snow seemed to have broken his oath. When Jon Snow hooked up with Ygritte in Season 3, the Wildlings and some among the Night’s Watch too believed that he had broken his oath. But since Snow has not lawfully taken Ygritte as his wife, once again no oath breaking happened.
Jon Snow’s “My watch has ended” dialogue also caused some buzz on internet:

Other key developments from Episode 3:
- Bran Stark is still under the tree, channeling visions of the past. This time he saw his father, Ned Stark, fighting along with Meer’s father. The scene also involved Mad King’s son Rhaegar Targaryen -who had kidnapped his sister. The Game of Thrones novel “A Song of Ice and Fire” suggests that Targaryen prince had raped Ned Stark’s sister, Lady Lyyana, and that Jon Snow was their son. This seems to have been carefully covered up by Lord Stark who always introduced Snow as his bastard.
- Sansa Stark is now out of danger after escaping Winterfell in the second episode and Rickon, her brother, has taken her place as Ramsay Bolton’s captive.
- Arya Stark is still learning to become No One and has cleared yet another stage in her transformation. The many faced god has given her eyes back to her, after Arya’s extraordinary fight against the trainer girl.
- Queen Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons, has been carried to the Dothraki’s city of widows. Apparently, she will stay there for some time, till someone comes to her rescue.
- In the absence of Daenerys Targaryen, Lord Varys and Tyrion Lannister have somehow identified those responsible of creating chaos in the city of Mereen.
- At King’s Landing, Cersie is back to her political games and has created a secret army of whisperers through the Maester, who has treated the Mountain as well. Meanwhile, the naive King Tommen Baratheone is still helpless against the High Sparrow.
