Revenue minister clarifies tax policy for travelers with extra mobile phones

ISLAMABAD – For the benefit of people arriving in Pakistan, the federal cabinet has approved the relaxation in policies regarding the tax to be imposed on new and used mobile phones.

State Minister for Revenue and Law, Hammad Azhar on Tuesday clarified the new tax levy system on mobile phones brought to the country by the passengers.

According to the new policy, passengers can bring one mobile phone to the South Asian country, but they need to register it free in order to use cellular services in the country.

Moreover, no registration and duty are needed on any phone using International roaming or to be used in Pakistan for less than 30 days.

For all other phones to be used in Pakistan, travelers can pay their duties and registration at either the airports or in any of the customs houses across the country.

“Mobile phones will not be detained during the process of registration or duty payments,” added Hammad in a tweet.

The state minister stated that no registration or duty is required on any phone that was activated or ever used in Pakistan before 1st of December 2018.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had imposed new tax criteria on the import of mobile phones in Pakistan to curb the mobile phones smuggling, which is dealing a blow to the national kitty.

According to the new law imposed by the PTA and FBR, passengers can take one phone per annum duty-free and up to a maximum of 5 phones in a year can be brought in. The duty on remaining 4 gadgets will have to be paid if you require service in Pakistan beyond 30 days.
